I wanted to make this post as I am experimenting with the Recomp + mods, and while there are some github repos or youtube videos that sort of consolidate things for you. One of my specialties when it comes to blog posts is resource gathering + sharing. I.e. Pokemon-like Code Bases in Godot, so I thought I'd put together the list here.

First just start off watching this so you can get a feel for what we are talking about.

I'm going to include a number of videos, but really the first few are probably the most important (I might add a video from my own channel if I get around to making one). The rest will be more for the fun of watching more, in case you're like me and wanted to see more.

I'll include the links to the top mods, as well as to the mod list pages so you can see the rest. This post will try to be sort of a tutorial in some places, but I'm still figuring things out too at the time of writing. Thus you might to check out the install pages for more info.

💡
The Voxel 3D look comes from the "Dramatic Shape Voxel Mod", but from what I understand it is depreciated already. Now Dramaless Shape is a fork of the original. My one complaint is that I got Dramatic Shape working, and the menu had a decent amount more options than the replacement, I still can't change some things in the new one, and I have an issue with battle scenes now.

Why should you care at all in the first place?

Besides the fact that it is a cool project, to essentially reimagine what the first/second generation games feel like to play.

I mean you can even play in first person, and I have some RayNeo XR screen glasses that I tried with it... it was surreal. Personally I grew up with Gen 3, so I'm more eager about that, but even I'm excited about this. I even thought what would it be like if someone did this to the Zelda Oracle games??

The recomp takes these old school 2D games into the 3D landscape, even adding distant cities, new water physics, 3D models from the N64 games, and a dynamic new way to play these retro games!

How do you install these mods?

While I've only tried it on Android, and maybe it would have been easier on PC. I wanted to play like I would on a gameboy with physical buttons.

  1. Firstly you need to download the Recomp program itself, and then place your legally obtained copy of Red/Blue/Yellow into it. Note: I think Gen2 is on the way as well.
  2. Once you have done that, test the game to see it working, and then you can install the mods. I couldn't get the modlist to show in the app, so I just went to the github repos themselves to download the zips. I installed via zip for each one manually.
  3. Try to be careful at this installing mods step, if modding Skyrim/Fallout has taught me anything, doing too much at once can cause issues. Which I did encounter, but they weren't game breaking just yet. You should try one at a time, it loads quick. I still have one mod that isn't doing anything yet.
  4. Note for the Recomp team: There should be a way to change the load order (like in Nexus mods Vortex) to solve any compatibility issues!

If you want to load in your physical copy of your Pokemon Games:

Play and manage Game Boy cartridges on your PC | GB Operator
Like adding a cartridge slot to your PC. Play Game Boy, Color, and Advance games with save sync, counterfeit detection, and more.

The Epilogue is a cartridge reader for PC, that allows you to pull in your saves from the official games, and to rip a copy of your official game. That is the most legal way of backing up your data and sourcing the file technically.

If you want that 3D Look:

While this is a "mod" it is pretty imperative for the function of what we are wanting from this recomp. Thus it gets its own section before the full list of mods.

Dramaless Shape:

As I mentioned before I somehow got my hands on the original Dramatic Shape mod, and it was slightly better (when it worked!). However it looks like that repo is now down. I'm not sure why, perhaps the author got flooded with requests or DM's, and I can understand. At least this Dramaless Shape mod is forked, and going to be updated for the foreseeable future.

OR

Potato Voxel:

This is a newer one, and supposedly it has better performance. Even loading in areas ahead, so that you don't notice? I found it when making this post, so I'll check it out next!

What are the top mods to get?

While I will share my own list, here is a video to showcase a lot of them as well, with overlap on my list too. I'll share the mod list pages below these links!

While my list here is sort of in order, it is more than likely you would use all of these/or most.
