Now this post isn't meant to be a newsletter, dramatic, or perhaps even seen. I'm just going to write it in my ✒️ Fireside Codex journal here, which is like a flow of thought tag on this site. Something that has been bothering is that while I love being pulled in many directions, as of late I have not been making enough progress. That is really frustrating considering how long I've been at this. I just got back from a podcasting conference, and I'm about to go to youtuber/video creator conference.
However I always find myself stating: I'm a Writer, YouTuber, Podcaster (often adding Speaker to the end now), but in THAT order because that is my preference on what I make.
My writing to be honest has been taking a back seat to the YouTube for a while. That includes my books as well. I need to sit down and finish multiple books, and then I can cap off certain niches for a while comfortably.
What would that mean for my YouTube channels?
The ULC channel has been dead since its inception, the Clips channels (2 of them) are dead in the water as I need to start cross posting to them when I share new clips. However now at this point I might just restart from the most recent season just in case, and to be honest I need to post mid form clips there more than anything. That means however that I need to go through 200 interviews again.
Finally, the three main channels: gaming, creator, and Polyinnovator.
Gaming is hit or miss when I make something, as it took a backseat to the main two. The Creator channel was ideally my focus, but it still wasn't super consistent.
PolyInnovator was consistent to a degree, but it is fluctuating on topics. Plus it is a slow growth channel. I'm fine with that, but I needed to to focus more on the channel that will grow faster.
I want to stop cold turkey, but I think the ideal situation is to just plan out 15 more videos for both channels. Schedule them out ahead, and just forget about them for a bit. The problem is that will take time, and I'm already wasting too much time.
What does it mean for Podcasts?
To be blunt I don't really care right now. My Polycast has been on hold right after I started it, and I haven't been able to line up guests regularly for it, and the Creator show is one of those things I was never super consistent with even though I wanted to be. I hate editing, and all of my podcasts are usually starting from video at this point. I stopped doing solocasts, beyond just a few for the how to be a modern content creator thing. I still think that would be fun, but I'm not on the right platform right now.
Substack is where I parked my shows for now, but I don't like the platform. Beehiiv seems really interesting to me now, but their pricing model is just egregious to me. 1 podcast with 1 episode a month on the free plan, and then when you pay $50 a month, then you get still only 1 podcast (I need at least 3), and only 4 episodes a month.
Transistor added the features I wanted right after I left, and its still pretty pricey for what I need. Personally I don't want to be spending money on my podcast anymore, it has never particularly made me any money. It was never supposed to really, its all about the networking and clips. Technically it lead me to working with OpusClip, so it did lead to income in some ways tangentially, but I don't monetize the podcasts (I don't want to either, just the videos and blogs).
Why focus on Writing?
That is my primary piece of content format, it always has been. It is funny that people know me from videos or podcasts sometimes more, but I have more than double the amount of written content than I do either video or audio content.
While I still enjoy the other mediums (even if Audio is just mostly cut from Video as of late), the flow of thought that I have with a written piece is a lot smoother.
I have a dozen books I want to make, two of which I've made a lot of progress on, and that isn't even including the secret one I started writing even way before my swimming one.
All in all, I don't know what will come of this idea. I could still do all the above, and just keep trying to juggle. That is what my main niche is about after all, but sometimes it is nice to just have a narrow focus for a while.
