Talking about what I have done, and this post is more of what I intend to do! One bag travel has been something I've been obsessed with, and honestly it is a positive habit. It gets me thinking how to downsize, minimize, and decrease my overall physical load when traveling. Preemptively also helping me prepare for when I eventually move as well, as I think the most efficient way for me to do it would be to fly somewhere. I've gone on now about 7 solo trips, where I might be meeting friends or coworkers, but the trip itself I am solo. I've also visited now at least ten big cities that I can think of off the top of my head. I'm more writing this section for comparison's sake when I get even more well traveled. Something I've been learning is that using only one bag, or at most two backpacks kind of thing. Is the most efficient way of traveling, you are free to do things with your hands, it means no checked bags, and more. This post is about my experience doing that, or at least trying to do that + some of the compromises I've made on some trips. --- ## Why should you do one bag? The aforementioned downsizing is one thing, as when you have multiple bags or items it quickly becomes too much to manage. Having just one, or in some cases two, makes it so much easier to breeze through the airport. Using a backpack instead of a suitcase also let's your hands be free to hold things, shop, etc. You may still need a suitcase for some cases, but otherwise keeping it off the ground. It forces you to really evaluate the items you are bringing with you, and whether or not they are worth bringing along. When you are solo traveling especially it can be hard to find places to easily store your belongings. You don't have a companion to watch them while you go to the bathroom for example. I bought a surprisingly versatile expandable backpack from Marshall's of all places, no name brand, but somehow pretty sturdy. It is more of a personal item size, even sometimes when expanded (depending on how much is in it). Additionally, I've gotten into the nicer travel backpack game, such as the tomtoc navigator 40L. It was more of an entry level nicer bag, but some of the issues were related to the lack of organization. Which to be fair was the point of that bag's design, but it was almost egregiously so. I sold, well traded, it and then bought [https://reworkgear.com/products/outbound-travel-pack-30l](https://reworkgear.com/products/outbound-travel-pack-30l?ref=polyinnovator.space) Which to mean seems a lot more effective, however at the time of this writing I haven't been able to use it on a trip yet. I will have two next month though. ### What are my plans to do it going forward? I like the idea I mentioned in the video, where I attach the hanging packing cube to the front of my backpack. That way the internal space can be used for belongings or souvenirs. My concern there is that then I can't use it as a personal item, its already pushing the limit for most airlines. Mostly just too tall, but with the attachment it will be too thick too. However it will be fine as a carry on. Perhaps the key is to find a sling bag that will fit on the front attached? 💡 I want to move really bad, and I am thinking that I'll probably do it via plane. Meaning I just have my two backpacks (three ish), and my suitcase. Unless I get another checked suitcase. I will definitely have to downsize a ton. --- ## What can you do? First step is to check your travel items, do you actually use them? Can you find smaller more portable versions, or things that are more than one function? Check your bag, can you get away with a personal item rather than a carry on? That can save you a ton of headache, although going that small usually requires intention. If you are usually doing checked bags, then try to see if you can fit it on a carry on and personal item next. Then go down to just one bag.
